RPCV Mary Bruce New Peace Corps Head of Recruitment & Selection (Morocco)

Mary ‘Emme’ Bruce

Emme, as she was called as a PCV, writes: “It was a big day yesterday. I’ve been asked to serve in the Biden Harris Administration as an Associate Director of the Peace Corps!

Alongside fellow appointees, I was sworn in by President Biden who shared “Very few times does an individual get to do something that can fundamentally positively impact other people’s lives, not only here but around the world.”

I’m thrilled, humbled, and ready to contribute to the amazing team already hard at work at the Peace Corps. Together, we’re rebuilding the pipeline of 7,000 volunteers in 60+ countries annually, as Peace Corps relaunches its work after evacuating all volunteers in 2020.”

For nearly two decades, Mary has supported the development and growth of young leaders and the scale and impact of social sector organizations, including work with America’s Promise Alliance, the Boston Public Schools, City Year, the College Board, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Grad Nation campaign, and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership.

Mary served with AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps (Morocco 2004-06). She served as co-executive director of AmeriCorps Alums where she launched Employers of National Service, commemorating the 20th Anniversary of AmeriCorps. Mary sits on the Advisory Committee of Equity in the Center. Mary earned her BA in Poverty Studies from the University of Virginia and her MPA in Domestic Policy from Princeton University.

  • As a former Associate Director of Peace Corps overseeing Selection, Recruitment and Placement, I welcome Mary Bruce to this important task and challenge for Peace Corps in 2021. As then Peace Corps Director, Loret Ruppe defined the role of recruitment Selection and Placement; “this is the engine and drive shaft of the Peace Corps—it has to function well or the whole program suffers”. This is more true than ever in these tumultuoes pandemic times.—congratulations on your appointment, God speed in your work as America re-engages as partners with the rest of the world.

  • By my count, according to posts on PEACE CORPS WORLDWIDE, this is the 4th member of senior staff appointed recently by the Biden administration, in addition to an Acting Director. I find it somewhat out of sync that these appointments are being made and announced before the appointment of an official Peace Corps Director. It would seem to me that it would be advisable that the PCD would have some sort of role in the selection of his/her senior staff.

“Dave Noble has been named chief of staff for Peace Corps
Scott Beale has been appointed Associate Director of Global Operations for Peace Corps
Sarah Dietch has been appointed to serve as director Peace Corps Response
RPCV Mary Bruce New Peace Corps Head of Recruitment & Selection (Morocco)
Carol Spahn has been appointed Acting Peace Corps Director by President Biden.”

  • Emme follows in the footsteps of Harris Wofford’, who organized our fantastic training program at Saint Johns College in Annapolus, MD.
