Transition of Peace Corps Worldwide Website

Marian Haley Beil and I have been writing about changes and developments in the Peace Corps, as well as, noting the publication of articles, essays and books by RPCVs for over 35 years. We have also reported on what the agency and Volunteers are doing worldwide. These are our efforts, we believe, at the heart of the Third Goal — to “bring the world back home.” Who does what Marian, as the publisher, edits, designs, and distributes the site. In the days of our printed newsletters, she also arranged printing and mailing. Now that we are online she has designed our site (with the great help of her son), and maintains a number of databases including one for 680 Peace Corps experience books, and another for more than 1900 Peace Corps authors. I am primarily focused on finding out what RPCVs are doing since their tours and using our . . .

THE EMERGING COOPERATIVE ECONOMY by E.G. Nadeau (Senegal)

New —  The Emerging Cooperative Economy by E.G. Nadeau (Senegal 1970-72) 246 pages July 2024 $8.00 (Kindle); $20.00 (Paperback)   The primary theme of The Emerging Cooperative Economy is that the world today is characterized by concentrated economic and political power, extreme inequality in access to basic goods and services, and environmental devastation. However, we are not stuck with such a dysfunctional economy forever. During the coming decades, we can transition to an international economy based on increasing political and economic democracy, meeting human needs, and sustaining the environment. This book presents a possible path for moving toward a more cooperative society and economy by 2050. Released in July, The Emerging Cooperative Economy describes the co-operative economy as “an economy that puts the wellbeing of the many ahead of the wealth and power of a few”, meeting human needs and protecting the planet. The first section looks at the world’s economic history, from the . . .

Looking East: Short Histories and More 2004 – 2023

Looking East: Short Histories and More 2004-2023 by Walter McClennen (Brazil 1967-69) Damianos Publishing June 2024 122 pages $19.95 (Paperback) Walter McClennen uses a “Short History” model to set forth a collection of his ideas reflecting on the deep past, and our more recent history, as well as the history we are making as we live our lives today. Looking East – Short Histories and More, 2004-2023, is a compact and thought-provoking read. From a ten page “Short History of the World,” to Peace Corps and Vietnam War impacts as felt five decades later, to the dual genius of the famous author, Harper Lee, and to some little-known history of his hometown, Holliston, Massachusetts, McClennen shares candid opinions and raises interesting questions that will challenge the reader. After graduating from Harvard in 1967 and serving in the Peace Corps in Brazil, Walter McClennen raised a family of four boys with his . . .

NEW — WALKING WITH EVARISTO by Christian Nill (Guatemala)

“To do the thing that was necessary — wasn’t that at the heart of our mission? And wasn’t it obvious what we needed to do? Plant trees; teach others to plant trees; save the crops from the inexorable forces of erosion.  . . .  but was that the only task that would be needed of us?”   Walking with Evaristo is a gripping journey — at turns lyrical, occasionally boisterous — venturing deep into the heart of a breathtakingly beautiful country torn by strife. And as the story unfolds, it also becomes a radical exercise in the recovery of personal memory. Nill chronicles three turbulent years working as a Peace Corps volunteer in a deeply traditional Mayan community that fell under the shadow of the sinister forces of oppression. Immersing his readers in the vibrant tapestry of life in a town called Rabinal, the author gradually becomes a witness to Guatemala’s . . .
