Sargent Shriver visited our Peace Corps contingent in Asmara, Ethiopia (now Eritrea) in 1962 or 1963. While walking down a city street with our Assistant Country Director and some others several street urchins approached him saying, “Sarge, Sarge give me five cents.” Shriver said to his companions, “They know me here.” What Sarge did not know, however, was that Asmara had a large American army base and the street kids were used to calling all Americans “Sarge.”
