  • The data can be seen in chart form, easier to read, when the link “Read More” is clicked.

  • Thanks for obtaining this information. I’m surprised at the low number of volunteers (228). Some posts show only one volunteer, possibly a returning evacuated volunteer. Is this list complete, I wonder.

    • Steve, I can only say that I made a FOIA request. The FOIA office is dependent on the information it receives from other Peace Corps Departments. The count of 253 is from my calculations. I could be wrong. It does include Response Volunteers. It is not unusual for only one Response Volunteer to be assigned to a country. The Response Volunteers are assigned based on very specific technical or professional skills. Their assignments are short term.

  • Right now, there is a labor shortage in the United States. Peace Corps is having to compete with employers offering great incentatives. Our own political environment is polarized. There is a uncertainly about what will happen with the
mid-term elections. My opinion is Peace Corps is having a difficult time recruiting.

  • Joanne, I think you’re right about the difficult time recruiting, as well as disruption of the “supply chain” (universities, recruitment offices, word-of-mouth by newly returned volunteers, etc.). In written testimony dated June 15th to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Acting Director said that: “By the end of FY2022 [September 30, 2022], we expect to have 1,000 Volunteers serving in 30 countries.” Given the FOIA number of volunteers at June 28th, 253, we should be expecting a big thrust in the next few months.

    • Thanks for that information, Steve. I don’t know how many potential Volunteers are in the “pipeline.”
It may be that college graduations may spur recruitment. I just don’t know. Evidently, the military is having a very difficult time recruiting , also.
