Nicholas Duncan (Uganda 2010–12) publishes Tales from a Muzungu

Imagine you are on a plane to a destination you know very little about and you will be living there for two years. On top of that, you don’t know anyone else going on this adventure, you only have a vague idea of what you will be doing, and you are not sure if you even made the right decision to go in the first place. A major comfort, though, is you know that you aren’t the only person having this anxiety because this is just the beginning of a Peace Corps Volunteer’s service.

tales-muzunguTales from a Muzungu by Nicholas Duncan tells of the highs and lows of his two-year experience in Uganda from 2010 to 2012 as a Peace Corps Volunteer. In his book, he details a variety of topics including:

  • The atmosphere of Uganda.
  • The the day-to-day life of a Volunteer.
  • What his first impressions were of the non-profit that he was assigned to work with.
  • How he dealt with the vagueness of the his job description — one that he would be working on for two years.
  • How he adjusted to the Ugandan culture and how it felt to stand out every day as an outsider
  • The bonds he had with people with whom he shared the same experience.

Though there are moments of danger, absurdity, joy, and shock, Tales from a Muzungu is a story that portrays the reality of what it is like to be a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Nicholas Duncan graduated from the University of Denver in 2008 and currently lives in New York working as an analyst for a consulting firm. Nicholas decided to write this book to provide a frame of reference of what it is like to be a Peace Corps Volunteer and to highlight the breadth of this experience.

In his spare time, Nicholas is an avid hiker, reader, and Monty Python fan. This is Nicholas’ first, but hopefully not his last book.
