Marian Haley Beil Interviewed on E&ERPCV September Virtual Event

Peace Corps Ethiopia & Eritrea Through The Years
Marian Haley Beil
Debre Berhan 1962-1964

The Ethiopia & Eritrea Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Board are pleased to announce our September Virtual Event featuring Marian Haley Beil, who was among the first volunteers in Ethiopia.

Save the date: Wednesday, September 14, 2022 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT

Marian Haley Beil was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, where she received a BA in math from a small Catholic girls college. She went to the University of Maryland for one year to study math, and it was there, in early 1962, that she had the great idea…  to volunteer for the Peace Corps. By midsummer, she was in a training program with 324 others at Georgetown University to be a math teacher in Ethiopia.

Since returning to the USA, she has worked tirelessly for the returned volunteers of Ethiopia and Eritrea. She started the first newsletter for the growing group of returning volunteers. Along with John Coyne, she started a blog: https://peacecorpsworldwide.org/category/pc-writers/ and worked to get the stories of the PCVs coming out of Ethiopia published. Finally, she established the Peace Corps Writers Imprint, encouraging all of us to write those stories down: https://peacecorpsworldwide.org/books/books-published-by-pc-writers/publish-with-pc-writers-imprint/

There are few who can match her enthusiasm for her work with RPCV writers. There are many who owe her for her dedication for creating opportunities such as EERPCV in order to bring so many of us together.  This is an opportunity to learn more about our history from one who helped create it. Please join us for this occasion.

We will send out the Zoom link the day before the event.

  • Can you list this on the peacecorpsconnect.org Events Calendar with a link where we can RSVP? That way we’ll get an email with the zoom link before the event. Thanks for sponsoring this important interview.

  • As has been said so often, while we don’t know exactly how Marian does it–let us pray and hope that she can continue doing it, for along with John Coyne, they have become the Voice of Peace Corps! In the past two years of Covid-19, would the American public even know that Peace Corps continued to exist without WorldWide’s constant stream of publications that are vividly representative of its 3rd Goal in action.

  • Like John, Marian has always been above and beyond when it comes to the Peace Corps. Her efforts with RPCVs to get our stories out are second to none. Am very much looking forward to receiving the Zoom link and watching the interview.

  • I’ve got Marian’s interview on my calendar, and I await the link! I’m sure she’ll be her totally modest self, but from personal experience, I want to say that she’s a fabulous editor: modest, patient, informed, organized, with a great sense of humor and a terrific graphic sense. We’re so lucky that she’s on our side as writers. She’s also an incredibly moral, committed, smart, hard-working person, which somewhat answers Jeremaiah’s question of “how exactly she does it.”

  • John, thank you for posting this. We are thrilled that she is willing to do this. I can’t wait for this event!

    • The article’s description of life in Eritrea and the principles of engagement are riveting and sad. There seems to be no less happy place on earth to spend one’s life. Even North Korea et al offer a collective joy within their cult societies.

  • Marian, it should be a fascinating interview. You have so much to talk about, the only constraint will be time. I look forward to watching.

  • Marian’s publishing and editing talents turned my pamphlet about peace into a 23 chapter book about the Kennedy brothers push for peace in the Sixties. Never had so much fun in my life….

Here here to Marian Haley Beil for putting substance into JFK’s request to bring home the experience…

    Sweet William

  • Thank you, Marian, for using your great gifts to help all of us and to establish and protect, with John, the Peace Corps legacy. I am so appreciative of your help and patience.
