After perusing the March Peace Corps books (Congratulations all!), it is satisfying to see that in the last few years, publishers have finally come to give credence to the Peace Corps experience. I think it’s an offshoot of the memoir craze as opposed to editorial imagination which doesn’t exist.
I remember 20 years ago your trying to sell a collection of Peace Corps stories and a publisher said to me that no one was really interested in people who had to kill their own chickens before eating them.
Thanks to your fortitude, we did end up with Going Upcountry, which was a collection of travel essays by Peace Corps witers rather than shots of creative nonfiction.
