Matthew Davis

The Alan Cheuse Writers Center is at George Mason University in Virginia and the founding director is Matthew Davis (Mongolia 2000-02). Matt joined the Peace Corps after college, and his years as a Volunteer in The Land of Blue Sky inspired his first book, When Things Get Dark: A Mongolian Winter’s Tale, which won our 2011 Peace Corps Experience Award. Davis holds an MFA in nonfiction writing from the University of Iowa and an MA in International Relations from The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He’s worked at The International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, been a Fulbright Fellow to Syria and Jordan and a Tom and Mary Gallagher Fellow at The Black Mountain Institute in Las Vegas.

The Alan Cheuse International Writers Center is a center that facilitates the exchange of international creative writers and writing in order to help foster the tolerance and understanding a more connected world requires.

Matt is reaching out to make RPCVs, particularly those from the greater Washington, D.C. area, aware of the Center and to invite them to events held at George Mason University.

Richard Ford

Matt is inviting any RPCV who can make it to hear novelist Richard Ford on May 4, 2017. Ford is making a special appearance on behalf of The Cheuse Center. Richard will be in conversation with NPR’s book critic for “Fresh Air” Maureen Corrigan. Ford and Corrigan will discuss Ford’s new book, Between Them: Remembering My Parents, (Ecco), a memoir in two parts about the lives of his late parents — a stirring meditation on memory, connection, and love, and asking how we can better understand ourselves by knowing the ones who made us.

The event will take place on George Mason’s Fairfax Campus, in Dewberry Hall North, within The Johnson Center. You can register for the event at their Eventbrite Page. The event is free and open to the public.
