The University of North Carolina will host a celebration in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps.

Events will begin Monday morning at The Pit on the Chapel Hill campus and will include alumni who have served in the Peace Corps. That will be followed in the evening by a showing of the documentary on the life of the Peace Corps’ first director Sargent Shriver.

Former volunteer and UNC graduate Suzannah Ellis Johnston will host an information session on campus Wednesday night.

There are 94 undergraduate alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps, making UNC No. 3 among large schools producing volunteers. Since the organization’s inception in 1961, more than 1,100 UNC graduates have served as volunteers.
