The posts in Notes from the Rainbow Room are written by Ralph Cherry (Ghana 1969–71), a man who is living a life deeply informed and shaped by at least two things: he is gay, and he was not only a Peace Corps Volunteer for 2+ years, but he has outdone just about everyone else by ending up with a 28-year career working for the Peace Corps. Through the unique prism of these two salient features — plus whichever others may also be at work, he will be writing about almost anything.

Hi Ralph, I remember a cookout at that wonderful house (my first visit) in 2000. You and I had been friends since early Peace Corps Washington staff days - I started in Volunteer Placement in 1972, the year I finished grad school and got married.

In 1998 I had ended the marriage, and completed my Peace Corps career (three years as PCV in Ethiopia and 14 years off/on as HQ staff). BTW, I was really impressed to read that you had 29 years with the Corps. Wow.

Back to he cookout. When the kitchen cleared a bit I nervously blurted out to you that I had met a wonderful guy and he had invited me to join him in Las Vegas, and that I would be departing Washington in September. Did you smile, smirk, nod approvingly? Don't know. All I remember were your words, warm and welcoming, "I knew you were gay the first minute we met." My reply: "Damn, I wish you had told me."

My dear partner Takashi and I are moving again, 99% sure it will be Fort Lauderdale. You guys will have to vsit from North Carolina. Kids are busy and happy in school in Arizona.

Congratulations on the marveous Delaware sale, and hope you and Steve knock em dead with the sale of the graceful Virginia home. hugs, CWJ
