My beat is economics and my four previous items on image building for President Obama dealt with economic issues. However, the biggest blow to his image has been, and will be, the war in Afghanistan.
I ask, how can a man who got elected in large part because he promised to end the unpopular war in Iraq, a war that still hangs like an albatross from President Bush’s neck, ramp up our involvement in Afghanistan, which promises to be an even more unpopular war and with much less chance for success?
The war in Afghanistan is going so poorly that the best outcome that our policy people can conjure up now is an alliance between the Karzi regime and the Taliban. And does anyone wonder who would dominate such a marriage made in hell? The best we can come up with is a return to Taliban rule with a front man dressed in traditional garb.
I see unmitigated disaster for Obama in Afghanistan. But then he could add the USA to an “illustrious” line of nations who met defeat in the “Roof of the World,”including the British Empire and the Soviet Union.
