Secretary of Defense Hagel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff  Dempsey were on TV today with a press briefing in which they called the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) also known as ISIL (Islamic State of the Levant) a “cancer”  that must be faced.  So there we have it, ISIS has replaced “weapons of mass destruction” as the threat we must face with strength and resolve, i.e. US forces.

The Obama Administration is pulling out all stops to make ISIS a sufficient threat to require the US Military going back into Iraq and adding Syria too. The irony is that a few months ago the same Obama was threatening to bomb Syria to support the ISIS and its colleagues in it war to overthrow Syria’s Bashar Assad.  Now the president wants to do war against ISIS.

This stands in sharp contrast to Obama’s brilliant policy to stay out of the chaos that has been Egypt these last few years when one long time president was overthrown by street mobs, then replaced by a democratically elected president who was then overthrown by a military coup placing the traditional military general in as president.  We wisely stayed out so that no one can blame the US for what has happened.

Now we go back to sticking our nose into another Middle East mess with no clear purpose other than to stop this “cancer.”  When will we learn to stay out of events in which we do not know the players, their motives, intentions or methods of proceeding.

Now we  have the absurd case of saving Assad.  The mind boggles.
