President Obama has now delayed his trip to the Far East to press for adoption of his health care reform bill. His action underlines the fact that the bill has lost all import for health care reform and is simply a fight for political survival. Obama and his team believe that failure to adopt the bill now will mean big losses in voter support come November. Not sure what radar screen these guys are watching, but the bill has already caused election problems.

If the bill passes it will be over the widespread rejection of it by much of the general public. Thus, for those who resist the bill, its passage will simply reinforce their opposition.

For those who want the bill, their support will start to wane when they begin to see that the bill will require major tax increases and that it will change Medicare for many of us old folk. The bill will be seen for what it really is, extending insurance to all with Uncle Sam picking up most of the cost for the extension. It does nothing to stem rocketing health care costs. There is not one single control over the health care providers in the 4000 plus pages. Rather the bill focuses on controlling health care insurers to in turn stem the increases. If you want the medical bills to be lower, press on the ones who write the bills, not those who pay.

How will the Democrats respond when someone correctly calls the health care reform bill a massive windfall of some 35 million new clients for the insurance companies with payment of their rates guaranteed by Uncle Sam? No matter what the result, the Republicans gain the political advantage.

I am stunned by how the Democrats could fall from an overwhelming political advantage gained in the 2008 elections to facing a major threat to their continued control of the Congress in a little over a year. Something has to be done, and done quickly to stem the bleeding. And passing the health care reform bill will not do the job, in fact it promises to only compound the steady losses.
