Some years ago a Peace Corps colleague, Bill Tilney, (yes, another Ehthiopia I) called me in Monterrey, Mexico from his home in El Paso, Texas. “Leo, they want me to run for judge,” he annnounced. I replied, “Well Roy Bean didn’t have any experience when they made him the ‘Law West of the Pecos,’ so you will be following in his footsteps.” Bill did not run for judge, he ran for mayor and won.

Judge Bean is known far and wide as the judge who was given to saying, “Give’m a fair trial, then take’m out and hang’m.” In fact Bean apparently only sentenced two men to death and one of those escaped.

Attorney General Eric Holder seems to want to take on Bean’s mantle. He is bringing the mastermind of the September 11 attack, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and some of his cronies from Guantanamo Bay to New York City to try them for the dastardly deed. When questioned about the transfer and the possibility that the accused could be freed by a court in New York, Holder replied, “Failure is not an option.” President Obama added later that those offended by the new trial venue won’t find it, “offensive at all when he’s (Mohammed) convicted and when the death penalty is applied to him.”

Talk about a rigged trial.
