The death toll in Europe continues to mount as the “Great Freeze of 2012″ continues to keep much of the continent shut down under a mountain of ice and snow. The tragedy points to a glaring fact often overlooked in the continuing “global warming” or “climate change” debate. Many more people die from excessive cold than from excessive heat. In Europe about 200,000 die from excess heat each year. But 1.5 million die from excess cold. The ratio of 7 deaths from cold to 1 death from heat appears to hold for most of the earth. Clearly a warmer planet will mean fewer deaths from extreme temperatures.

And more from flooding.
I would be concerned about climate change altering flooding if all but one of the world’s major rivers had not been altered already by manmade devices, e.g. the Aswan Dam. Man is clearly able to control flooding.
Global warming will actually cause Europe to get colder. Most of Europe is in the same latitude range as much of Canada, but Europe is warmer because of the effects of the Gulf Stream. As the Greenland ice cap melts it sends cold water into the Gulf Stream thus lowering its temperature and reducing its warming effect on Europe.
Witness New Orleans and more recently, North Dakota.
Reilly,
My understanding is that the water from the Ice Cap is fresh water and it dilutes the saline content of the Gulf Stream and thus reduces its carrying capacity. The warm water sinks. The effect is the same for Northern Europe.
Joey
The Army Corps of engineers will address the problems that led to North Dakota and New Orleans being flooded, unless the environmentalists stop their work.
Reilly
Perhaps the cooling caused by cold water from Greenland “flooding” the Gulf Stream will balance the continental warming due to the “Greenhouse” effect.
