Day 12 of my Boycott of TSA and the Airlines
So I’ve promised to be solution-oriented for the remainder, mostly because I can’t keep reading stories, predictions, worst and base case scenarios of doomsday. The preppers are taking action, bless their hearts.
Crazy people and how to talk to them:
I had no idea this was a huge movement. I’m feeling a bit embarrassed actually, and very confused.
The truth is I have a hard time keeping my head in line with what I’m trying to find solutions for–apathy, disempowerment, sheepishness? And yet so many are trying to do so much.
Why do my searches in the area of SSSS boarding cards and terrorist watch lists always lead me back to survivalist groups and conspiracy theory?
The government certainly wants us to prepare ourselves and has published lots of material about it.
They are finding “terrorists” through social media.
On Facebook I read:
To learn who rules you simply find out who you are not allowed to Criticize(-Voltaire)
First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Pastor Martin Niemöller
Ok, so I see I’m not being solution-oriented already. I’m just repeating the problem in endless new ways.
I know these moments when everyone seems to be talking about the end of days have popped up throughout history, but wow it’s everywhere-from pop culture to underground to intellectual circles and across age, class, background. Maybe the fear will work for all of us as a catalyst and wake-up call to join forces and prepare. There are some real hopeful sites and movements started, some I’ve written about here many months ago. But I can’t write about their ideas and progress today.
What I’m noticing today is for all the problems and predictions of what it will be like and how it will happen only a fraction of it is looking at comprehensive solutions for now or the future and generally don’t ask the question, what if there is no great worldwide catastrophe, then how short of force will we get everyone to change their ways?
Should my energy finding a solution go toward getting me off the list? Because that alone would be a huge endeavor. Of course that still leaves the problem of the x-ray screening devices, shoe and shirt removal, and the pat downs, and the ridiculous toiletry quota. My complaint is so much bigger now than just The List. The List was just the catalyst.
Should I just give up flying altogether? Start preaching with the preppers? March in the streets? Boycott politics by not voting or participating (so far not working)? Volunteer for Ron Paul? Do more yoga? Eat more veggies? Buy a hybrid? A survival kit, a canner, guns? Drill a well? Build a fortress?
How do I know what to do to save the planet when I’m fairly clueless how to save myself?
This is where we get stopped. So much to do, so little time.
Follow this blog for the next 13 days and really consider if all this Terrorist Watching is making you feel any safer.
