Giving Richard Holbrooke (RIP) the bird is hardly disqualification. I know of quite a few people who have wanted to do that while working with him.

Please compare Ms. Rice’s credentials to that of Connie Rice and Senator Clinton. Please indicate why you think that Ms. Rice is not qualified.

Ruth Marcus’ argument is not compelling. The gender issue and Senate privilege are excuses, not convincing arguments. Ms. Rice’s qualifications and achievements simply do not rise to the level we have justifiably come to expect of a candidate for Secretary of State. The President must nominate someone whose credentials transcend that of Ms. Rice. It shouldn’t be difficult and there is too much at stake.

Just another anecdote:

Arnie Arneson the first woman to run for governor of New Hampshire tells the story of giving a speech on some hot-button issue, after which a prominent businessman came up and praised her speech, but quickly added that he couldn’t vote for her. She asked why. He said, sheepishly, “Well, you know, the woman problem.”
